Dolby and DTS have competing object sound formats on the market.
Dolby offers is Dolby Atmos home audio format that uses Dolby TrueHD codec, as well as those platforms that work with Dolby Digital Plus.
DTS has launched the DTS: X format, which replaces DTS HD.
Support for DTS: X has acquired many consumer electronics manufacturers, such as Anthem, Denon, Marantz, Onkyo, Pioneer, and others.
What is better – DTS or Dolby Atmos
In terms of content, Dolby is the leader, as the company has already developed certified tools that allow studios to prepare movies for the Atmos system for home use. Currently, many films have already been released in this format, including Gravity from Warners Studios, Transformers: Age of Extinction from Paramount, and The Expendables 3 from Lionsgate.
DTS: X format also provides for the presence on the market of content mixed accordingly. DTS said that sound in this format can be easily obtained by mixing content recorded with the soundtrack in MDA format (Multi-Dimensional Audio), which was already used in the production of master copies for cinemas using the Auro sound immersion system from Barco.
But it is worth noting that the DTS: X format is not compatible with video, the sound of which is mixed in the Atmos format.
What should I choose or DTS and Dolby Atmos comparison
The important point is that DTS does not have any list of recommended acoustic configurations at all, if Dolby advises certain kits with additional ceiling speakers (5.1.4, 7.1.2, etc.), then the engineers at DTS found this pointless. In their opinion, object codecs are good because they do not have bindings to certain column configurations. It all depends on the manufacturers of acoustics – they will be able to decide what systems should be for working with the DTS: X format.
The ability to make boost mixing is another difference between the formats. At DTS, this technology is called Neural: X – for example, a standard soundtrack in DTS-HD format. Sound 7.1 can be converted by the receiver to play on a set of speakers with additional ceiling speakers. The technology itself will adjust to the existing configuration. Dolby Atmos also has an upmix function, but it’s hard to say which of the two formats will do the job better.
